The Project Management Tool Kit

This book is a collection of techniques to manage project tasks of all sorts--from presentations to metrics, managing change to managing risk. It defines each task in easy-to-understand language, explains when and why it would be used in managing a project, and provides concrete steps showing how the task can be accomplished. This book refers to numerous other tools, particularly types of charts, graphical software programs, and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) methodology for project management, but may not define them completely. This book is a nice quick-start or refresher for those who manage projects from time to time, but it may prompt you to consult with other materials to thoroughly explain particular processes.

Velocity

"In physics, speed with direction is velocity; in business, the application of velocity means that your organization can achieve operational speed with strategic direction to outmaneuver competitors, gain loyalty in customers, and rapidly build sustainable earnings growth." This business lesson, written in the form of a novel, shows how Lean Six Sigma can be implemented in an organization. The believable situations and realistic characters bring to life the strong feelings and interpersonal conflicts that this technique can raise in an organization.

Less

This book examines busyness. A certain amount of busyness is necessary for life, but for many people, it has begun to consume them, run them ragged, and get them nowhere. In a world that drives us to always want more--more money, more activity, more stuff, more friends--Lesser's book explains the benefits of stopping. This book is about finding peace in the middle of activity. Lesser outlines a simple, yet radical approach to transforming your life from an endless list of to-do's to a more meaningful, productive, and less hectic one.

Power of Less

Many of us are living a 24-7-365 lifestyle these days. Babauta argues that much of this is simply busywork, clutter, and noise. He advocates simplifying--just doing less--in order to become more productive and efficient. He stresses several principles, including setting limits, increasing focus, developing new habits, and making small changes at a time. At the same time, he offers practical solutions for the types of problems often encountered in the workplace, including identifying tasks, time management, managing e-mail and internet activities. He advocates establishing routines, keeping the spaces around you clean and clutter free, and balancing work with appropriate fitness and nutrition choices.

The 4-Hour Workweek

Ferriss suggests that many executives could dramatically reduce their time spent working by delegating work to virtual assistants and investing in business ventures that generate income with very little time spent on them. This kind of work life, he states, allows the executive lots of time to travel and pursue hobbies while providing plenty of money to live on. To pursue this type of work life, he states that first, you have to define your goal. Next, eliminate tasks that take time and learn to selectively ignore information. Third, he explains how to automate your income so that it takes up very little of your time. Finally, he explains how you can spend the time that you've now liberated for yourself.
